Cancun Underwater Museum (MUSA)
Cancun and Isla Mujeres Nautical associates and dive organizations along with artist/Scuba Diving Instructor, Jason deCaires Taylor develop this Museum project to provide a choice of a type of theme scuba dive, to have art that encourages the colonization of coral echo-systems also called artificial reefs. The cement finish and composition of the statues invite underwater organisms and marine life to develop a habitat. The figures are transformed over time by the environment, changing the statues" shapes so the next time you visit the same statues look incredibly different.
First phase: of the dive museum started with the sinking of 3 statues, La Jardinera (The Gardener) El Hombre en llamas (Man on Fire) due to having several small holes filled with fire coral and El Coleccionista de Suenos(Dream Collector) this statue he used bottled messages from many different places.
Second Phase: LA EVOLUCION SILENCIOSA. (THE SILENT EVOLUTION). The artist's most amazing endeavour. 500 life-size statues that provide a documentation of how society and people have changed over time both physically and socially. The installation starts with Mayan times and goes through todays society. It is also to remind us of how we are connected to nature.
The Third phase of the museum is in process and it is about local artists participating with several more sculptures. Museum scuba diving available for beginners, certified divers, referral Open Water Course dives and snorkel.
